Chapter Nineteen

Blood rushed in Leigha’s ears. One more thing out of her control. She loved for her father despite their turbulent relationship. They had unfinished business and she needed answers. Her hope to repair her relationship with him would take a back burner to getting him well again. She couldn’t imagine what could be wrong. He was always strong and healthy, as if nothing could touch him.

Mac herded everyone in the back of the suburban. They squeezed into the tight space. “Everyone, this is Sean Knight. He’s my boss at MBK and knows the details of the case.”

A mumbled hello barely pierced the dense air. She wound her fingers together to keep them from shaking. This would be another unknown for her, and she didn’t like surprises.

She looked over. Sean wore a tight smile. His eyes focused on her.

He leaned in closer. “I’m sorry for the intrusion. Mac and I were headed to check out a lead on another case when he got the call. If there’s anything I can do for you, let me know.” His eyes were sincere, but she wondered about his heart. Word had it he was a player. He went through women like water. He grabbed her hand, holding it momentarily. His contact gave her little comfort while she worried about the condition of her father.

The car ride to the hospital remained cloaked in nervous silence. Outside, things rushed by, beeping, clanking, and carrying on. The world inside slowed, suspending them in anticipation.

As they arrived at the hospital, everyone rushed out of the car, charging into the emergency room. Reality assaulted them with crying babies, grimaced faces, and an overbearing antiseptic smell.

Mara rushed to the desk with her and Raquelle on each side. “Where can we find Antonio Luccenzo?”

Without looking up, the nurse dryly asked, “Are you family?”

“Yes. We’re his daughters.”

“Fine. You can go see him. Room 5 at the end of the hall.” Her eyes lacked even a sliver of sympathy amidst the chaos.

Mara turned to Mac and fell into his arms. He stroked her back, whispering reassuring words in her ear. She ached to have what they had. The battle within her raged on between the need to lean on someone and being strong enough to handle everything on her own. Her thoughts wandered to Dean. She could use his strength right about now.

A hand rested on her waist, snapping out of her internal dialogue. “I’ll be here if you need anything, anything at all.” Sadness hazed Sean’s eyes.

She could easily anchor herself to his strength and warmth of his body, but she questioned his sincerity. Instead, she pulled away from him. “Thank you. I’ll let you know.”

She turned and grabbed her sisters’ arms, leading them to the unknown. They maneuvered around gurneys and wheelchairs, stopping outside the curtain for Room 5. Bracing herself, she pulled the curtain back, startled at the scene before her.

Agony painted Mama’s face. Tears streamed down her cheeks. The word bellas left her lips in a whisper. She moved toward them in slow motion, hunched over as if it took all her energy to get to them.
